God's Master-Fencer

"Grace withereth without adversity.  The devil is but God's master-fencer, to teach us to handle our weapons."--Samuel Rutherford

  1. Hi, Jordan,

I love the quote! It reminds me of pieces of Milton's "Paradise Lost", which I am reading now for literature. The summary of it all is that the devil's trouble-making does a service after all; otherwise, we would never be tested and strengthened to endure.

Recently, I located a website I thought you might enjoy, if you don't know about it already: http://www.ballantynethebrave.com/
It focuses quite a lot on famous Scottish authors and other figures. It apparently it's run in conjunction with the "Vision Forum" homeschooling program. I think the author has a different view of John Graham than you do, however; he's leaning more towards "Bloody Clavers" than "Bonnie Dundee"!

Another thing I found out recently is what became of those two scouts sent out by Sir John Cope. I read it in an old book called: "Sir John Cope and the Rising of 1745."

Apparently, the two captured scouts were threatened with being hanged for spying, but some generous personal acquaintances who happened to be fighting on the Jacobite side suggest that they simply be thrown out into the front of the battle to be shot by the gunfire of their own comrades! Not quite pleased with that plan, they managed to escape their captors and return to the royal army by the afternoon, living to gain prestige and fame as Lord Gardenstone and General Cunningham.

    God Bless,
    Pearl of Tyburn
